How to Choose The Right Hiking Socks?
Tag: Smartwool Hiking Socks.
Any experienced hiker knows that choosing the right type of socks is extremely important. If you choose the wrong socks you can quickly end up with blisters, fungal infections, wet and cold feet. The right hiking sock is just as important as choosing the right hiking boots or shoes.
The very best socks for hiking are those that are made from synthetic fibers such as acrylic, polyester, or wool. These types of fibers help keep feet dry and free from painful blisters. Wool socks, in particular, are very durable, they allow your feet to breath while still providing the insulation that you will need while hiking. However, one should note, that wool can be itchy and for that reason a bit uncomfortable. However this is probably it’s only main disadvantage.
If one is going on a long hike, cotton socks should be avoided at all costs. This is because cotton keeps moisture in, which can result in fungal infections and blisters. Cotton also fails to insulate the feet from the elements. These factors make cotton socks a no-no for long hikes.
When choosing a sock, be sure that the fit is snug, but not too snug. You do not want your socks to fit tightly or you will find them to be uncomfortable. Also, be sure that your socks have proper weight, especially if you are hiking on a tough trail and in harsh conditions. You may want to consider either doubling up on socks or wearing a synthetic liner underneath larger pairs of socks. Liners help to keep the feet dry and larger, heavier socks help to cushion your feet and keep them warm. If you are worried about your feet getting wet, simply grab a couple extra pair of socks to use as needed.
Choosing the right hiking socks will be very important to the quality of your hiking trip. Wet, cold, blistered or itchy feet are the quickest way to ruin a beautiful and invigorating hiking excursion. It is also a very simple problem to fix. Just be proactive and choose the proper socks. Synthetic fiber blends such as wool, polyester or acrylic will give you the best support and will ensure that your feet stay clean and dry. If you find yourself going on a long, tough hike or if the weather conditions are less then ideal, double up on your socks and keep a couple of extra pairs in your pack. It will ensure that you have a much more enjoyable and dry experience.
